Hi! My name's Sophia :)

About me

My name is Sophia and I am the first mate on the Oriental Lady. I am also the oldest of the 4 children in our family. This year I'm doing online schooling because my family travels around a lot, which makes attending a regular school quite difficult. When I was at school I went to NCG Prep and I loved it there but I also loved the opportunities I have now with online schooling. I have realised over these last few years that I achieve more learning at home than I did at school, just being able to work at my own pace and complete as much work as I needed to stay ahead made a huge difference! For example I’ve been using Education Perfect and IXL, so if I get in the zone with a subject like English or maths, I can just run with it for a few hours or more. I normally try to do a subject a day as that works better for me. 2024 is going to be a big year for me. I have begun online Correspondance School in preparation for my first set of exams later in the year.

We are currently mostly based in Nelson, Havelock, the Marlborough Sounds and Wellington. We move between these locations alot, With lots of time on our boat. We bought our 57ft launch a few years ago and it was our first EVER boat! We bought it instead of a house up-size (which was kind of needed for our family of six!) or Bach and we all have loved this decision! My Mum and Dad work in digital design and marketing, so we all work remotely as we take our starlink where ever we go.

The last couple of years have taught me a lot about myself, and I have realised that I love being on boats so much that I would like to spend my 20's working on Super Yachts. As first mate on the Oriental Lady my jobs are quite varied and I have been building up and logging my hours behind the helm. Further education is really important to me so I achieved my Day Skippers Certificate as soon as I could and am looking forward to gaining more certifications. I would like to work through various other marine courses as I become old enough, and eventually end up being a captain on Super Yachts one day.

My other passion is dance. I am currently Advanced 2 in ballet but I love all dance styles, and attend workshops around the country. Last year I was in Wellington for all of term 3 because I was lucky enough to perform in the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) as a paid model/performer, and I am hoping to get to do that again this year. Fingers crossed! I’m saving the money I earn from WOW to fundraise towards going to Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2025. I’m hoping to choreograph the company's next show Mama Mia in term 2, which is an option for the show we take to the Fringe Festival.

I love reading, whether we’re out in the sun on our boat, on a car trip, or before bed. I also play a little bit of piano (a few songs) but would love to learn more.

The subjects I have chosen this year will hopefully work towards my future plans. I’d like to first study business/commerce and marketing after highschool. (To have something to fall back on after I’ve done the traveling yacht life!)

My family have a marketing and design business, so I'm learning the ropes as I go, and helping out with work as a job in 'afterschool' hours.

I’ve recently learned that for people working on yachts and traveling the Mediterranean, a good skill to have is the ability to speak French, so maybe I’ll pick that subject up over the next few years. I’m currently checking out Duolingo for this.

My family consists of my parents, two brothers, a sister, four birds and a dog. We have a really small extended family. I’m pretty sure that’s why my parents decided to have four kids; they needed to increase the numbers!

I love my lifestyle right now and I feel very fortunate to be in the position I’m in. Studying online with Te Kura, I'm able to persue my dreams.

Nga Mihi,

Sophia xx
